Sri Chandrasekarendra Saraswathi Swamigal, the 68th Shankaracharya of Shri Matham, “Maha Periyava” to the millions of His devotees, spent three years between 1911-1914Â to learn the Vedas from eminent scholars at Mahendramangalam
Maha Periyava was appointed head of the Shri Matham at a very young age and had a lot of visitors in Kumbhakonam. The Mutt authorities decided on Mahendramangalam for his study where he would not be disturbed.
Sri Mahaperiyava observed Chaturmaasya vrata for three years and this is where Mahaperiyava started his holy padhayatra (Digvijaya) too.
